I'm known as British Bob the Career Coach and yes I and my wife are British and have lived  in the the USA for many years now.

Career Coaching is usually provided for top management and executives who can afford that luxury, or it is paid for as part of a severance package. However, the truth is, we all need some help in life at critical times but often the help we need is out of our reach either by location or cost. Yes I worked in that environment not far from Washington DC and yes again, they cough up many thousands of dollars for career coaching or advising.

Myth #1: Be prepared with a list of questions to ask at the close of the interview.

There is some truth in this kind of advice: You should always be prepared, and that is the most important aspect these coaching sessions deal with first. To understand your past, even back to your childhood because that has had a big hand in shaping who you are today. Recognizing what went right and what didn't in your life as well as your work world and how closely the personal experiences in life intertwine with your work experiences. This helps to lay a great foundation for real growth and development in the future.

The correct preparation is so very necessary now in this 21st century with the different approaches that have come on board to interviewing.  Preparation includes developing questions related to the job. The myth here is that you must wait until it is "your turn" to speak. By waiting until the interviewer asks you if you have any questions, it becomes an interrogation instead of a conversation.

Think of an interview as a sales call. You are the product and you are selling yourself to the employer. You can't be passive in a sales call or you're not going to sell your product. It's a two-way street, ask a follow-up question at the tail end of your responses.

For example, if the interviewer says, "Tell me about yourself," you first respond to that question, and in these career sessions you will learn how to and how NOT to answer that question and not to lose the job right there, and complete your response with a question like, "Can you tell me more about the position?"

The interview should be a dialogue, but again you will learn about that in the coaching sessions.

Myth #2: Do not show weakness in an interview.

It is OK to have flaws. Almost every interviewer will ask you to name one. Typically job seekers are "wrongfully" told to avoid this question by providing a "good flaw." One such "good flaw" which is often recommended is: "I am too committed to my work." But, these kinds of responses will only hurt you. Every recruiter can see through that.

Recruiters conduct interviews all day, every day. They've seen it all and can see through candidates who dodge questions. They prefer to hire someone who is honest than someone who is obviously lying.

Myth #3: Be sure to point out all of your strengths and skills to the employer.

You want the interviewer to know why you are a valuable candidate, but a laundry list of your skills isn't going to win you any brownie points. You will be asked about your skills but you don't want to list a litany of strengths.

The typical “wrong” answers are: 'I'm a good communicator,' 'I have excellent interpersonal skills,' 'I am responsible.” You have to give accomplishments. The interviewer wants to know what you accomplished when using these skills.
